Police arrest suspect in murder of UEW lecturer

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the gruesome murder of a Senior Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

The arrest was made earlier today at the lecturer’s residence in Essuokyir, following a report of the academic’s disappearance.

The suspect, identified as Joshua Karry Arthur, was apprehended after the lecturer was reported missing on May 21, 2025, by colleagues who had been unable to reach him despite numerous attempts.

Police investigations led officers to the victim’s residence, where Arthur was found and taken into custody.

According to a statement from the Central Regional Police Command, investigators discovered blood stains at the scene.

The stains were traced to a nearby heap of sand, approximately 23 meters from the house. After clearing the sand, police uncovered a body believed to be that of the missing lecturer. The body has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

A number of items identified as belonging to the deceased were retrieved from the suspect, including two Samsung mobile phones, a laptop, a 50-inch television, and a car key to a Toyota Fortuner.

The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities have indicated that he will be arraigned before court in due course.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the university community and the broader Central Region, where colleagues and students of the deceased have expressed deep sorrow over the loss.

Police say further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
