Save, stay focused, and dare to risk

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has delivered a powerful call to action for students at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), urging them to build their future on vision, financial discipline, and bold decision-making.

Speaking at a TESCON event held at the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Auditorium, Agyapong encouraged students to think long-term and stay true to their goals rather than being distracted by temporary pleasures or societal pressure.

“If you want to be like Honourable Alfred Obeng, begin to have a vision — a vision that allows you to look ahead and say, ‘This is what I want to become in five to ten years,’” he told the audience, referencing the businessman and Member of Parliament known for his success story.

Agyapong, known for his frank and pragmatic outlook, reminded students that the path to success is never a smooth ride. “Anyone who tells you that life is going to be easy is not telling you the truth,” he cautioned.

He further advised students to prioritize saving over spending, especially on luxury items that only serve to create temporary impressions. “Postpone spending on material things today and save for tomorrow,” he said.

“When you see a colleague wearing expensive clothes, don’t be swayed by the glitz. Don’t spend your last resort money — money someone gave you — just to fit in. Be yourself and save the little you have.”

But saving, he emphasized, is only part of the journey. Agyapong believes that calculated risk is what transforms savings into wealth and impact.

“When you’ve saved enough, then you can begin to take risks. To borrow my daughter’s words: risk. The future belongs to risk takers, not security seekers,” he added.
