Chairman Wontumi reports to Police HQ with former Attorney General Godfred Dame

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Monday, May 26, 2025, reported to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra in response to a police invitation.

He was accompanied by former Attorney General Godfred Dame.

The development follows a dramatic attempt to arrest Chairman Wontumi at his residence in Kumasi last Friday, May 23, by a combined team of National Security and police operatives.

The operation triggered a swift response from supporters of the NPP regional chair, who massed up at his residence in protest, condemning the heavy security presence.

Although security officials have yet to publicly disclose the reason for the attempted arrest or the police invitation, sources suggest it may be linked to ongoing investigations into alleged misconduct.

Speaking prior to his appearance, Wontumi’s legal team maintained his readiness to cooperate with law enforcement.

His lawyer, Kwame Adom Appiah, told the media that his client was not evading justice and was willing to present himself as required.

Meanwhile, Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi has defended the state’s actions, insisting that the operation was lawful and in line with national security protocols.

He dismissed accusations of political targeting, stating that “the National Security will not go to Wontumi’s house without a reason.”

Chairman Wontumi’s appearance with former Attorney General Godfred Dame has drawn public attention, signalling the political weight and legal seriousness the case may carry.

The CID is expected to continue its investigations in the coming days.
