Man arrested for trading opioids, possessing unlicensed firearm

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Aminu Amidu Mohammed, for possessing and distributing harmful drugs, as well as unlawfully keeping a firearm at his hideout in Sabon Zongo, Accra.

His arrest followed a tip-off from a local community watchdog group, which led a police intelligence team to his location.

Upon a search, authorities found large quantities of prescription-only medications, including Gebedol and other opioid substances commonly referred to on the street as “Red.”

At a press briefing held at the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Monday, May 26, Regional Commander DCOP Duuti Tuaruku confirmed that the suspect had already been arraigned before court.

“The police, acting on reliable intelligence, successfully arrested the suspect who was found in possession of dangerous pharmaceutical drugs and an unlicensed firearm,” DCOP Tuaruku said.

“We are urging the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of our communities.”

The arrest is part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal drug distribution and firearm possession in urban centers across the region.
