Ken Agyapong stands as surety for Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi in $2m Sky Train trial

Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has stepped in as a surety for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), who is standing trial in connection with the controversial $2 million Accra Sky Train project.
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi was granted bail to the tune of GH¢10 million with two sureties to be justified.
Mr. Agyapong, a leading figure in the New Patriotic Party and a well-known businessman, fulfilled part of the bail requirement by vouching for the 80-year-old academic, whose age and medical condition have been cited in court proceedings.
The former GIIF chair pleaded not guilty to four charges, including wilfully causing financial loss to the state, intentional dissipation of public funds, and conspiracy to commit a crime.
The charges relate to the disbursement of $2 million to Africa Investor Holdings for the development of a proposed Sky Train project—an initiative that never materialised.
As part of his bail conditions, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi has surrendered his travel documents and is required to report weekly to the police.
The trial, which is being heard by Justice Comfort Tasiame at the High Court in Accra, has been adjourned to June 10, 2025, for a case management conference.
