UHAS renamed after Ghana’s late president

The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced the official renaming of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho.

The university will now bear the name John Evans Atta Mills University of Health and Allied Sciences (JEA Mills UHAS)—a gesture that cements the late president’s enduring legacy in the field of health and education.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the university’s newly constituted Governing Council at the Ministry of Education earlier today. Addressing attendees, Minister Haruna Iddrisu highlighted that the renaming was not just symbolic, but a testament to the visionary role Professor Mills played in establishing the institution.

“This renaming honours a visionary leader whose legacy continues to shape Ghana’s development,” he remarked.

The decision was met with enthusiastic support from the newly appointed Governing Council, chaired by Professor Kodzo Gavua. Prof. Gavua assured the Minister and Ghanaians that the Council would work tirelessly to uphold the university’s commitment to academic excellence and service to the nation.

John Evans Atta Mills, a law professor and former Vice President, served as President of Ghana from 2009 until his passing in 2012.

Known for his calm demeanour, integrity, and dedication to social justice, Prof. Mills championed initiatives that improved access to education and healthcare.

His vision for a better Ghana led to the establishment of UHAS in 2011, the first public university in the Volta Region.
