NRSA blasts Accra MMDAs for defying directive on billboard removal

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a stern warning to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region, threatening legal action against those that fail to remove unauthorised billboards from road medians by Monday, June 2, 2025.
The move follows a failed engagement between the Authority and the assemblies, as many of the targeted MMDAs did not attend a scheduled meeting meant to discuss a compliance roadmap.
Speaking to the media, NRSA Director-General Abraham Amaliba expressed disappointment over the low turnout, describing the conduct of the assemblies as a show of defiance.
“We invited all of them through the Local Government Ministry. Unfortunately, some misunderstood the invitation and thought it was a nationwide call, which led to the presence of assemblies from outside Accra,” Mr. Amaliba explained.
“However, those within Accra who were actually required to attend failed to show up. We are treating their absence as a deliberate act of noncompliance, and we will proceed to take legal action against those who ignored our directive.”
He revealed that the NRSA had initially issued a 21-day ultimatum for the removal of the illegal billboards and had intended to use the meeting to offer a possible extension. But with the relevant assemblies failing to attend, the Authority now intends to let the courts decide.
“This means they are not interested in complying. So, what we are going to do is meet them in court,” he stated.
The NRSA maintains that the removal of unauthorised billboards is a critical public safety issue, warning that such structures pose significant risks to road users and undermine efforts to reduce accidents and fatalities.
