Top NPP figures rally behind Wontumi as Bawumia joins bail push

Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Divine Agorhom, has revealed that the party’s highest-ranking figures, including former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, are deeply involved in efforts to secure bail for embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking to Citi News, Agorhom noted that support for Wontumi transcends any single individual, underscoring that the party’s leadership at all levels is working collectively to ensure his release from EOCO custody.
“It is not only His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia but every senior party person. We are hoping that the EOCO itself will be able to vary the condition a bit more lenient for us to meet,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi has been held by the Economic and Organised Crime Office since Tuesday, May 27, over allegations of fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering. The bail conditions, which include a GH₵50 million surety, have been deemed by some party members as punitive and politically charged.
Agorhom further hinted that the party is exploring multiple avenues to address the situation legally, expressing hope that a path could be found to ease the terms of Wontumi’s release.
“If that is not the case, my understanding is that the council is considering legal avenues to vary the conditions. If all that fails, then we will have to pull resources and see what we can do to get him out,” he explained.
In what he described as a unified effort, Agorhom confirmed that Dr. Bawumia, along with the party’s parliamentary caucus and national executives, are all engaged in the process.
“Not only His Excellency the Former Vice President, but all leading members, including our caucus in parliament and the national leadership. They are all involved in finding a solution,” he affirmed.
