Gov’t clears SSNIT arrears, boosts funding for free SHS

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has assured the newly constituted Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) that government has fulfilled all outstanding financial obligations owed to the pension fund.

At an inauguration ceremony held in Accra, Dr. Forson reaffirmed government’s resolve to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s pension system.

“I want to assure you that the government is current on all payments due to SSNIT,” he stated. “We are determined to continue honouring these obligations to safeguard the pensions of Ghanaian workers.”

SSNIT Director-General, Kwesi Afreh Biney, backed the Minister’s comments, revealing that not only has government cleared inherited arrears, it has also stayed up to date on all current payments due the Trust.

The announcement comes at a time when public scrutiny over the handling of pension funds has intensified, with many calling for greater transparency in SSNIT’s investment decisions.

The latest assurance is expected to calm nerves and reinforce public confidence in the financial health of the Trust.

The newly inaugurated SSNIT Board, chaired by Nana Ansah Sasraku III, comprises representatives from government, labour unions, and employer associations. Their mandate is to provide strategic direction and ensure robust governance in the management of the Fund.

Meanwhile, earlier disclosed that the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has received a significant GHS2.7 billion allocation covering the first four months of 2025. This, he said, is aimed at securing the long-term sustainability of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.

“The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has received a total of Two Billion, Seven Hundred and Ten Million, Two Hundred and Twenty-Seven Thousand, Nine Hundred and Forty-Seven Ghana Cedis (GHS2,710,227,947.00) for the months of January, February, March and April, 2025,” he announced.

He noted that the fund now serves as the primary financial backbone of the Free SHS policy, a shift formalized in the 2025 Budget. According to him, this injection of funds addresses key concerns surrounding student feeding and the erratic supply of essential resources in public senior high schools.
