Cedi appreciation worthless if gov’t is stealing Ghc 1 per litre of fuel

Communications Team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has questioned the impact of the dollar’s reduction on the lives of ordinary Ghanaians if fuel prices increase.

His question follows the introduction of the Fuel Levy, which forces every Ghanaian to pay GHC 1 per litre when purchasing petroleum products.

To him, the government cannot tout the reduction of prices at luxurious appliances and furniture shops while the market women at Malata continue to suffer because transport fares are up.

“The introduction of this levy will mean that transport fares are going to skyrocket. This will mean that the appreciation of the dollar will have no effect on the market women at Malata. They will be suffering because fuel prices will increase, and the passengers will bear the brunt of the decision,” he said.

He continued, “The market women will pass it on to us. The government is touting Hisense, Orca Decor, and others who have reduced their prices as a result of the appreciation of the dollar. But the question is, how many Ghanaians patronize these luxury shops in the country? However, the prices in our markets are skyrocketing because the government is taking a cedi for every litre of fuel. The lord should give us the strenght because he is the only truthful one and in the future, will we will account for our stewardship”.
