Woman arrested for allegedly pouring acid on ex-boyfriend

A 30-year-old woman, Mavis Nkrumah, has been arrested by the Tesano Divisional Police Command for allegedly attacking her ex-boyfriend with a substance suspected to be acid.
The incident occurred in the early hours of May 28, 2025, at Ablekuma Fan Milk, a suburb of Accra. According to police reports, Mavis had gone to visit her former partner, 29-year-old taxi driver Gideon Frimpong, to confirm their breakup.
Superintendent Julianna Obeng, Head of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command’s Public Affairs Unit, said in a statement that the suspect showed up at Frimpong’s residence unannounced around 1:00 a.m. After a brief conversation, she requested that he drive her home.
“On reaching a section of the road, Frimpong requested Mavis to alight since the road ahead was bumpy and rough,” Superintendent Obeng said. “Mavis questioned him about their relationship, and after the third confirmation of their breakup, she got out and through the driver’s side of the car, poured the substance suspected to be acid on him.”
Frimpong suffered burns to his back, neck, and other parts of his body. He was quickly identified by bystanders and rushed to the hospital, where he received treatment and has since been discharged.
Mavis fled the scene after the attack and reportedly attempted to escape to a neighbouring country. However, she was apprehended on June 3, 2025, and is currently in police custody.
The police have cautioned the public against resorting to violence to settle personal disputes.
“Acts of violence are criminal and will be dealt with by the law,” Superintendent Obeng warned. “The Command remains committed to ensuring public safety and urges all to report suspicious or harmful behaviour promptly to the nearest police station.”
