Ministry of Education commiserates with family of Lawra SHS students who died in canoe accident

The Ministry of Education has expressed profound grief over the drowning of seven students from Lawra Senior High School in a canoe accident on the Black Volta River on Saturday June 14, 2025.
In a press statement signed by Deputy Minister Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, the Ministry confirmed that the students—five girls and two boys—were part of a group of ten cadet corps members who attempted to cross the river near Dikpe during a morning jogging exercise. The canoe capsized midway, resulting in the tragic incident.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this heartbreaking loss,” said Dr. Apaak.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, the school, and the entire community during this difficult time.”
Three students were rescued, while emergency teams from NADMO, the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Education Service recovered the bodies of the deceased.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has ordered an urgent meeting with school and regional officials to review safety protocols.
“We assure the public that student safety remains our top priority,” the statement emphasized.
