Sammi Awuku lauds Mampong deaf school for bold participation in parliament forum

Students from the Senior High Technical School for the Deaf in Mampong recently engaged Members of Parliament in a dialogue.

The forum, spearheaded by the Department of Public Engagement and supported by Hon. Samuel Awuku, MP for Akuapem North, offered hearing-impaired students a rare opportunity to interact directly with lawmakers, ask questions, and understand how the legislative arm of government functions.

“Mr. Speaker, the encounter provided a platform for students living with hearing impairments to interact directly with legislators and provide them with a real-world understanding of how Parliament works,” Hon. Awuku said in Parliament on Wednesday.

The event featured presentations from high-profile MPs including Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Hon. Edem Agbana, and Hon. Shirley Kyei.

Their participation underscored Parliament’s commitment to expanding civic engagement beyond traditional boundaries.

Hon. Awuku noted that the forum was not just symbolic but substantive, allowing for meaningful feedback from students and educators alike.

Several of their concerns—ranging from accessibility challenges to policy gaps—were shared, prompting calls for inclusive reform.

“More importantly, it highlighted critical concerns and thoughtful proposals made by the students and their teachers,” Awuku noted.
