Interior Ministry agencies donate GH¢1 million to Mahama Cares medical trust fund

Mynewsgh has learnt that 11 agencies under Ghana’s Ministry of the Interior have collectively donated GH¢1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares.

The donation was made during a short ceremony held at the Jubilee House, where senior officers from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Prisons Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and other interior-affiliated institutions were present.

The contribution is in support of President John Dramani Mahama’s new flagship health initiative aimed at easing the financial burden of Ghanaians seeking emergency and life-saving medical care.

Mahama Cares is the public-facing name for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund — a social intervention policy initiated by the Mahama administration to provide critical medical support to citizens who cannot afford urgent healthcare.

It seeks to bridge the gap left by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), especially for surgeries, specialist treatment, and chronic conditions not covered by insurance.

The initiative was launched in April 2025, and its mandate is to respond swiftly to verified medical requests — particularly cases that might otherwise spiral into loss of life due to lack of funds.

In launching the fund, President Mahama emphasized that no Ghanaian should be left to die simply because they cannot afford treatment, declaring the initiative as one rooted in “compassion, equity, and shared national responsibility.”
