Tension rock Tarkwa-Nsuaem NPP over secret polling station registration

There is currently growing tension within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Constituency of the Western Region following a secret polling station registration exercise.

MyNewsGh.com has been reliably informed that the situation nearly led to fisticuffs between some members of the party, whose names have been conspicuously missing from the register in view of the political turmoil in the area. Shocking in the latest development is that members of the NPP believed to be loyal to the former Corporate Affairs Manager for Ghana COCOBOD, Mr Fiifi Boafo, who, it is gathered, is lacing his boots to contest the seat in 2028, have been left out of the secret ongoing registration exercise.

Sources within the party revealed that the move was meant to consolidate the base of the former Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, George Mireku Duker, who was defeated in the 2024 polls for varying reasons.

In the ensuing melee over the ongoing brouhaha, members were seen in videos intercepted by this portal, openly confronting each other, while others, whose emotions had the better part of them, became physical.

It is unclear if the secret registration exercise is being sanctioned by the national hierarchy of the party or if it could be classified as a submarine operation to satisfy the parochial interests of some individuals.

A group of party supporters called on the constituency chairman, Mr. Benjamin Assabill, who stated he has not sanctioned any such registration of polling station members, which will form the basis of the polling station album. All other constituency executives have indicated that the party is not undertaking any such activity, even though the exercise is ongoing.

In a very surprising twist, a former NDC propaganda secretary of Tarkwa Nsueam constituency, Joseph Abban Mensah who is an aide to George Mireku Duker has told Tarkwa-based Space FM that the exercise is a normal process in the NPP and no one must question it. It must rather be accepted and used for the selection of delegates.

The latest development in the already tense constituency comes barely two months after the Chief of Dompim Pepesa, Ohyeawora Bian Nyowah Panyin IV, who is a cousin of George Mireku Duker, leading his 2028 comeback campaign after losing miserably in the 2024 elections with almost 9,000 votes in the last elections, took on his sub-chief on ‘political lines’

The crime of the chief is that he visited Mr Fiifi Boafo, former Communications Director of the COCOBOD, during the Easter holidays at his residence in Tarkwa in the company of other people.

He considers it disloyalty and disrespect to him, the chief, since he, the chief, supports his cousin in seeking reelection. The Tufuhene was summoned to the palace in the company of his family members and charged with the offense of disloyalty, MyNewsGh.com has confirmed. The bizarre incident has got people talking and questioning the legal or traditional basis for such an act, while some are accusing Ohyeawora Bian Nyowah Panyin IV of playing to the gallery.

Nana Awuakoapong, the Tufuhene of Dompim Pepesa, is said to have recently visited Fiifi Boafo, rumoured to be considering a run for the parliamentary seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tarkwa-Nsueam constituency. This visit, alongside several residents of Dompim, has reportedly enraged the Dompim chief, who views the act as a potential signal of widespread support for Boafo’s political ambitions, even among other chiefs and residents of Dompim Pepesa—the hometown of former MP George Mireku Duker.

The implications of the Tufuhene’s visit remain murky; it is unclear whether any traditional or legal breaches have occurred by his meeting a fellow native during the Easter holidays. Dompim Pepesa, a smaller town within the Tarkwa-Nsueam constituency, is already grappling with political tensions.

While the exact details of the visit are not yet known, it is believed to have stirred unease among supporters of the former MP, raising questions about loyalty and the future political landscape in the community.
