GMeT workers demand improved conditions and payment of allowances

Workers of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) are calling on the government to urgently address long-standing challenges affecting their welfare and operations, including poor conditions of service, obsolete equipment, and unpaid overtime allowances.

In a press release signed by Mr. Paston Ahenkan Egyir, Divisional Chairman, and Mr. Jessie Quaofio, Divisional Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the staff appealed to the government to intervene and ensure the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) settle outstanding debts owed to the Agency.

The statement, which was also copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), comes after a prior petition submitted to the Agency’s management and the sector minister failed to yield results.

The workers noted that the unresolved concerns were making working conditions extremely difficult and placing essential national services—such as weather forecasting and aviation safety—at risk.

“The continuous neglect of the Agency and its staff by both past and present governments not only demotivates but also undermines the trust between the staff, management, and government,” the release stated.

GMeT staff say they are grappling with rising living costs and diminishing morale, a situation that has led to attrition and mounting frustration within the Agency.

The workers further warned that they would consider all available avenues to press home their demands if no action is taken.
