NIA appeals for calm, assures staff of imminent allowance payments

The National Identification Authority (NIA) is calling on its staff to resume work as it works to resolve the ongoing impasse over unpaid Operational Support Allowances.

In a statement issued by Acting Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the Authority acknowledged the legitimacy of the workers’ concerns but appealed for calm and cooperation while steps are taken to address the matter.

The strike, led by the NIA Division of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), began on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, raising concerns over delays in Ghana Card registration and verification services across the country.

Management revealed that a meeting had already taken place with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), led by Dr. George Smith-Graham, to find a lasting solution. However, the NIA explained that actual payments hinge on receiving a definitive payment schedule and written assurance from the Ministry of Finance.

The statement warned that prolonged strike action could lead to service interruptions and revenue losses for institutions depending on the Ghana Card system.

Reassuring staff of their commitment, the NIA said, “The allowances will be paid very, very soon,” and urged striking workers to return in the interim.

The Authority also announced that another round of discussions involving the FWSC, the union, and the Ministry of Finance will be held once confirmation is received.

The NIA Governing Board, chaired by Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku, expressed full support for efforts aimed at resolving the standoff and reiterated its commitment to honouring staff entitlements.
