Why Bawumia should not be blamed for our loss – Nana Akomea clears the air

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has strongly pushed back against claims that the party’s 2024 electoral loss should be blamed on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s religious background or presidential ambitions.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Akomea emphasized that credible data and objective analysis do not support such narratives.

“At the time we lost the elections, Bawumia was not the flagbearer or president. Musah Dankwa, one of the most credible researchers in the country, did not blame Bawumia,” Akomea noted.

Addressing suggestions that Bawumia’s faith may have worked against the party, Akomea dismissed them as unfounded and divisive.

“Claims that people didn’t vote for him because he is Muslim are baseless. He secured more votes than some Christian candidates in several regions,” he stated.

The former NPP National Communications Director further warned that the real danger facing the party isn’t religion or ethnicity itself—but how those elements are being manipulated by internal actors in pursuit of power.

“There is division over religion, over tribe, and all because of people eyeing the flagbearer slot. This is not good for the party,” he cautioned.

Akomea revealed that the growing cracks within the party had forced the hand of the National Council to act decisively.

He said their decision to hold the next flagbearer congress in January 2026 was a strategic move to bring closure to internal strife and avoid further disintegration.

“The National Council decided we can’t wait any longer for the congress. With all these divisions, sitting idle was not an option,” he explained.

“That is why we have scheduled the flagbearer election for January 2026 — to end all the chaos and confusion.”
