GNFS contains fierce Arts Centre fire, over 50 structures lost

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that it successfully brought a massive fire outbreak at the Arts Centre in Accra under control, with no casualties reported.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, the GNFS disclosed that the fire broke out on Tuesday evening, June 24, destroying more than 50 wooden structures and their contents opposite the National Lotteries building at the Arts Centre.

“The fire, reported at 1820 hours, was at an advanced stage upon arrival of the Ministries Fire Station crew at 1826 hours,” the statement read.
“Due to non-functional hydrants in the area, four additional fire engines had to be deployed from the Electoral Commission, Accra City, Parliament House, and Greater Accra Regional Headquarters substations to support operations.”
Despite the intensity of the blaze, firefighters managed to bring the situation under control by 7:00 p.m. and fully extinguished the flames by 8:44 p.m.
“Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were recorded,” the GNFS noted, adding that adjoining structures were protected and salvaged thanks to the swift intervention by personnel on the ground.
The operation was led by ACFO II Osmond Anum and the Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Rashid Nisawu, who were both present at the scene to oversee the firefighting efforts..

The Service further revealed that investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway.
“We are committed to determining the cause of the fire and will release updates in due course,” the GNFS added.
