Education Minister calls for swift BECE results, announces scholarship reform bill

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to ensure the timely release of the 2025 BECE results to ease the growing anxiety among students and their families.
Speaking at the 2025 WAEC Distinction Awards Ceremony on Thursday, June 26, the minister applauded WAEC and the Ghana Education Service (GES) for the smooth and credible conduct of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
However, he emphasized the importance of swift feedback for the thousands of students awaiting their placement into senior high schools.
“Let me commend you for a very successful BECE examination,” Mr. Iddrisu said.
“What we expect from you now is the early, timely release of the results so that anxiety and anxiousness in the students will go down.”
The minister also used the occasion to announce a major legislative step towards equity in scholarship allocation in Ghana.
According to him, in the coming weeks, the government will lay before Parliament the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill, aimed at addressing long-standing concerns of nepotism and unfairness in the scholarship system.
“Within the few weeks to come, I will introduce the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill to Parliament on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, as he promised Ghanaians to deal with the issue of nepotism that was associated with the award of scholarships,” he revealed.
The bill, when passed, is expected to streamline and make more transparent the processes involved in awarding academic scholarships, ensuring that brilliant but needy students across the country get a fair chance at accessing quality education.
