Bryan Kohberger, 30, a former Ph.D. candidate in criminology, shocked the nation by pleading guilty to the horrific stabbings of four University of Idaho students in 2022: Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves.
Kohberger, a former Washington State University student, is charged with killing them in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, early on November 13.
Kohberger’s plea deal, which was accepted in June 2025, spares him from the death penalty but mandates that he serve four consecutive life sentences without the chance of release.
Some victims’ families, like the Mogens, were glad that a protracted trial was averted, while the Goncalves family vehemently objected to the agreement and charged that Idaho’s justice system had betrayed them.
