I won’t defend NPP members arrested for embezzlement—Eugene Boakye Antwi

Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, will not defend any former government appointee arrested for embezzlement.

He is of the view that if such persons are arrested, the opposition political party should not just jump to their defence just because they are their members.

Rather, he believes that if such people are found culpable and there is evidence for their prosecution, the law should be allowed to take its due course.

“I’ve been a member of parliament in this country for eight years, I’ve been a deputy minister, and I am not an ordinary Ghanaian who will jump on a propaganda bandwagon. If things come to me, I have to internalise it,” he told Channel 1 TV’s Umaru Sanda in an interview monitored by mynewsgh.com.

When asked if the opposition’s position is not only to oppose, he said, “No, so you oppose because of what? So if Umaru was an NPP minister under Akufo-Addo and indeed Umaru has stolen state money, and then I jump to a defence and I’m shown evidence that indeed Umaru got himself involved in a contract, I wouldn’t defend you.

I am saying that not all those who vote for us are NPP. There are so many floating voters in this country. Ghanaians vote for us because we are a decent lot. So if I go and stand out there to defend somebody who has stolen state funds, what am I selling to the public? That NPP has become a haven for criminals,” he questioned.
