Political vendetta against CJ Torkornoo must be a worry for Ghana’s Judiciary—Eugene Boakye Antwi

Former Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has expressed concerns over the suspension and process leading to the removal of the Chief Justice of Ghana, Getrude Torkornoo.

To him, the suspended chief justice is a victim of a political vendetta.

He says if the government indeed has evidence to back their claims against her, she must be provided with the evidence for her to respond to them.

Eugene Boakye Antwi explained that it should not be that the Chief Justice is just being targeted by people who have some form of vendetta against her because she was appointed by the previous regime, because that will be a worry for the judiciary in nation-building.

“She was calling for a televised hearing. If you say it is a breach, then you must allow her to also vent because we don’t know what is going on in there. Her phones are being seized, her spouse is being prevented from being in the room, and we are hearing all manner of things.

That is why we say if indeed she has committed a crime, nobody will support her, but if indeed she has not but she is being harrassed by the nation, people are just sending dubious petitions against her person then we must all be worried about the future of our judiciary in nation building because we don’t want somebody to be targeted because of her been appointed by the previous regime,” he explained.

He cited previous chief justices who were not removed after there was a change in government, questioning what has changed under the current regime.

“So what has changed? People who have a vendetta against this woman should all search their conscience. If they really think she has committed a crime, nobody will support her. I believe all the allegations against her have been answered and she’s proven that the things that they are put out there are not true,” he said.
