Today, Nkrumah’s dream comes alive again – Mahama declares at 24-Hour Economy launch

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the Volta Economic Corridor as the central pillar of his administration’s newly launched 24-Hour Economy policy, describing it as a bold, transformative initiative to revitalise Ghana’s economic landscape through strategic use of the Volta Lake and its surrounding lands.
Speaking at the official launch of the programme on July 2 in Accra, Mahama declared: “Our flagship intervention is the Volta Economic Corridor.
“A transformation effort that will unlock the economic and environmental potential of the Volta Lake and its surrounding lands.
“Today, we will recreate Kwame Nkrumah’s dream. Today, his dream comes alive again.”
The corridor, which sits at the heart of the 24-Hour Economy agenda, is set to stimulate activity across agriculture, industry, transport, tourism, and logistics.
According to Mahama, the policy isn’t just about longer working hours—it’s about unleashing productivity and creating value through well-planned interventions that will boost Ghana’s competitiveness and address unemployment.
The Volta Economic Corridor includes several major projects under the broader national strategy.
Under the Grow 24 framework, over two million hectares of land surrounding the lake will be irrigated to support intensive year-round farming.
Under Make 24, the government will establish agro-industrial parks focused on producing textiles, pharmaceuticals, and processed foods—an effort to reduce imports and strengthen local value chains.
Tourism also plays a critical role. Through Show 24, tourism clusters will be created along the lake to harness Ghana’s cultural heritage and natural beauty, offering new economic opportunities in the hospitality and leisure sectors.
Meanwhile, under Connect 24, the Volta Lake itself will be transformed into a central transportation corridor, linking Ghana’s North to the South and East to the West to ease the movement of goods and people.
