24-Hour Economy policy aims to add value, not reinvent the wheel – Prof. Bokpin

Professor Godfred Bokpin, a respected finance expert at the University of Ghana, says the 24-hour economy policy being implemented by the Mahama administration is a deliberate attempt to shift Ghana’s economy from its current state to one driven by value addition.
Speaking during an interview on TV3’s KeyPoints on Saturday, July 6, Prof. Bokpin emphasised that the policy does not require the creation of new bureaucratic structures to be effective.
“Clearly, there is an attempt to move the economy from deformity to value addition. We don’t need to create an authority to implement the 24-hour economy,” he stated.
According to Prof. Bokpin, several existing institutions, including the Ministry of Finance, already have the capacity to support and monitor the implementation of the policy, particularly when it comes to tracking fiscal implications.
“There are many existing institutions that can help with monitoring the implementation of this policy. The Ministry of Finance can help with monitoring the fiscal aspect,” he explained.
Rather than establishing new agencies, the finance professor advocated for strengthening public ownership and accountability by providing periodic updates on the progress of the policy’s implementation.
“We rather need to strengthen the ownership through periodic updates on progress of work,” he added.
