Police arrest key suspect in connection with 12 stolen motorbikes in Accra

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a key suspect believed to be behind a spate of motorbike thefts across several parts of the capital in recent weeks.

The suspect, Emmanuel Akanpatiba, was apprehended on June 24, 2025, following a report by a resident of Madina whose red Royal motorbike (registration number M-25-CW 367) was stolen while parked in his compound overnight.

Acting on intelligence, police officers traced the stolen motorbike to Akanpatiba, who was found in possession of it. During interrogation, he admitted to the theft and named an accomplice, Israel Fredrick Lomotey, who is currently on the run.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect and his accomplices were responsible for at least twelve motorbike thefts in areas including Madina, Adenta, Lapaz, and Teshie over the past month.

According to police, Akanpatiba disclosed that he usually breaks the steering locks of targeted motorbikes, transports them to the Agbogbloshie Onion Market, and sells them to known receivers—identified as Nurudeen, Ali, and Inusah—for amounts ranging from GHS 2,000 to GHS 3,000, depending on the motorbike’s registration year.

Efforts are ongoing to arrest Lomotey, Nurudeen, Ali, and Inusah, and to recover additional stolen motorbikes.

The Accra Regional Police Command is urging the public to secure their motorbikes and other valuables and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the remaining suspects or stolen motorbikes is encouraged to contact the police through 18555 or 192.

Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, reaffirmed the police’s commitment to clamping down on motorbike theft and ensuring the safety of residents.
