KNUST student jailed 10 years for robbing hairdresser at knifepoint

A Level 200 student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after admitting to robbing a young woman at knifepoint.

The convict, 25-year-old Fatawu Amponsah, who also works as a driver’s mate, pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his own plea by the Akropong Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District. The case was presided over by Her Honour Gloria Mensah Bonsu.

According to the prosecution, led by Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on June 16, 2025. The victim, Juliet Nyarko, a hairdresser apprentice, was walking home from the Abuakwa township when Fatawu trailed her along a dark section of the road.

He demanded her iPhone 11, which is valued at GH¢3,000. When she resisted, Fatawu pulled out a kitchen knife, beat her mercilessly until she weakened, and then pushed her to the ground before fleeing with the phone.

Her cries for help alerted residents nearby, who pursued and apprehended the attacker. Fatawu was later handed over to the Abuakwa Police, leading to his swift prosecution and sentencing.

The court’s ruling brings some relief to the victim and community members who have expressed growing concern over rising incidents of street robberies.
