The EC is fueling public distrust – Seth Acheampong

Seth Acheampong has issued a sharp rebuke of the Electoral Commission (EC), accusing it of reinforcing public doubt and failing to take responsibility for electoral crimes committed during the 2024 general elections.
The former Eastern Regional Minister, questioned the Commission’s integrity and decision-making processes, particularly in light of recent events surrounding the Ablekuma North parliamentary elections in an interview on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Thursday,.
“Events leading to the disruption are all criminal. Nothing has happened to that. You haven’t pursued it, and you expect me to believe what you want to do?
Take the necessary steps to assure me that you mean well,” he said, referencing the burning of the EC’s collation centre and other unresolved incidents from the December 7, 2024, elections.
His comments come in response to the EC’s decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The Commission cited the use of unauthenticated pink sheets—those lacking the necessary endorsements from presiding officers—as the reason for the rerun.
However, Acheampong argued that the EC itself was compromising its credibility.
“You came to Parliament to say what you wanted to say, and now you’re going back on your word.
“I think maybe they lost their spine when Mr. Asiedu Nketia made his commentary elsewhere, saying the EC is not fit for purpose.
“Sadly, the EC is now fueling that narrative,” he said.
