Minority blames NDC for chaos at Ablekuma North rerun

Violence erupted across several polling stations during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, with reports of physical attacks on politicians, journalists, and arrests of suspicious individuals impersonating security personnel.

One of the most alarming incidents occurred at St. Peter’s Polling Station, where NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson, and former MP Darkoa Newman were reportedly assaulted by unidentified men.

At North Odorkor Polling Station 2, EIB journalist Banahene Agyekum was allegedly slapped by a police officer while covering the elections.

Elsewhere, at the Awoshie DVLA Polling Station, individuals dressed as security officers were arrested after failing to produce identification.

Additional clashes between NDC supporters and the police at Asiedu Gyedu Memorial School 1 further disrupted the voting process and heightened tensions on the ground.

In the aftermath, the Minority Caucus in Parliament has released a statement condemning the “widespread acts of violence and lawlessness” that marred the rerun.

The statement, signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, squarely blamed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for instigating the chaos.

The Caucus named Malik Basintale, Deputy National Communications Officer, and Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, as individuals seen in video footage directing and encouraging violent acts.

Their actions, and the justifications being offered by other NDC leaders, are a direct attack on our democratic process,” the statement read.

“These acts are depriving the people of Ablekuma North of their constitutional right to representation.”

The Minority also accused the Ghana Police Service of standing by while the violence unfolded, despite earlier warnings.

It called for an immediate investigation into the conduct of officers and the various disturbances reported throughout the day.
