Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Council of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), calling on the members to spearhead a review of the Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537) to align with present-day realities.
The announcement, shared via Muntaka’s official Facebook page on Monday, July 14, highlighted the need for reforms that would equip the GNFS to meet emerging global threats and standards.
“I called on the Council to initiate and lead a comprehensive review of the Fire Service Act, 1997 (Act 537) to reflect current realities and align the Fire Service with emerging global standards and threats,” Muntaka wrote.
He reaffirmed the Ministry of the Interior’s full backing and pledged the government’s support to ensure the Service is modernized, adequately resourced, and governed by strong policies and ethical leadership.
“I reaffirmed the Ministry of the Interior’s full support for the Council and pledged our commitment to ensuring the Service is modernized, properly resourced, and guided by strong policies and ethical leadership.”
Muntaka also used the occasion to congratulate all Council members on their appointments and conveyed President John Dramani Mahama’s trust in their ability to lead effectively.

He concluded by calling for a united effort to enhance the Service’s capacity. “Together, let’s strengthen the GNFS to safeguard life and property, protect communities, and build a safer Ghana.”
