Bawumia’s 52% in Akan Regions should worry the NPP – Solomon Owusu warns

Solomon Owusu, a Senior Communicator for the Movement for Change, has raised red flags over what he describes as worrying polling figures for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly in its traditional stronghold—the Akan regions.

Owusu told host Alfred Ocansey that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 52.25% lead in recent polls is not as impressive as it may appear, especially when considered in context.

“Looking at these figures, it should be a source of worry to the NPP. Because if you are talking about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia leading by 52.25, this is in the Akan regions. This is not a national picture,” he pointed out during an interview on TV3.

He emphasized that the data being analyzed was drawn strictly from the Akan regions, which have traditionally delivered the majority of NPP’s votes in national elections.

“We drill down the data to the Akan regions… So even the Akan regions—remember, the NPP has been getting the majority of its votes from there,” Owusu explained.

According to him, in previous polls and elections, Dr. Bawumia polled between 67% and 68% in the same Akan regions, suggesting a noticeable drop in support.

“In the Akan region in the last elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was doing around 67 to 68 percent,” he said.

Owusu argued that this downward trend is significant because the Akan regions have often served as a reliable barometer for NPP’s national performance. He urged the party to reflect carefully on the shifting numbers as it gears up for the 2028 elections.
