Gov’t to rebuild Zugran statue after Bawku clash – Omane Boamah

Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has announced that the government will reconstruct the vandalized statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area in Bawku, following a violent clash between military personnel and some local youth on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The incident occurred after the youth reportedly attacked military officers stationed in the area, prompting a response that led to the destruction of the cultural monument.

Addressing the media in Accra on Monday, July 21, Dr. Boamah disclosed that the government is taking steps to restore the statue in an effort to promote reconciliation and cultural respect.

“Government has decided to take necessary measures to reconstruct the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area in Bawku,” he stated.

On the broader security front, the Defence Minister assured Ghanaians that the Ghana Armed Forces remains vigilant and prepared to de-escalate any renewed conflict in the area.

“The Ghana Armed Forces is actively monitoring developments and have put in place robust mechanisms to ensure any potential escalation is swiftly contained in the interest of a peaceful and long-lasting resolution of the conflicts through dialogue,” he said.

Dr. Boamah also reiterated the country’s stability and the government’s commitment to ensuring national peace and security.

“Ghana is safe, peaceful, stable and ready for a reset agenda,” he said, adding that “criminals who want to foment troubles in the name of chieftaincy will be dealt with.”
