Tamale ‘Drug Lord’ convicted after pleading guilty

A Tamale circuit court has convicted Alhaji Abdulai Sayuti, 53, for possession of opioid drugs, including tramadol and tramaking.
Alhaji Abdulai Sayuti was fined 14,000 penalty units for each count, totaling 28,000 penalty units, which amounts to GHS 336,000. In default of payment, he faces a sentence of 25 years in prison. However, both counts will run concurrently.
The circuit court judge additionally ordered the convict to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for 36 months.
The judge also directed that the exhibits be deposited with the registrar for subsequent handover to the authorities for destruction on a scheduled date.
It will be remembered that some weeks ago, the Northern Regional Police Command, through an intelligence-led operation, arrested Alhaji Abdulai Sayuti.
Upon his arrest, the police said 368 blisters of tramadol and 298 blisters of tramadol were found at Victory Cimana near Aboabo in the Tamale Metropolis.
A statement signed by Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Lukman Neindow indicated that further investigations led officers to a warehouse in Fou, where they discovered 447 boxes of tramadol and 11 boxes of tramaking.
