NPP must wake up to voter realities – Govt spokesperson

Government spokesperson Anthony Kwame Julius has urged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop assuming blind loyalty from the Ghanaian electorate, warning that voters are not permanently bound to any political tradition.

Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Starr 103.5 FM Tuesday evening, Julius said,

“The NPP should realise that people of Ghana are not robots sworn to any political party and will by all times stick to them.”

His comments come amid the NPP’s internal reorganization following its defeat in the 2024 general elections, which saw former President John Dramani Mahama return to power under the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Julius argued that rather than reflecting on the factors that led to their electoral loss, the NPP seems fixated on internal power struggles.

“That is why immediately after they lose power, it is about primaries, who leads the party, who holds power,” he said.
“When you lose power, it is about those things rather than analysing the issues that go into the people’s livelihood.”

He referenced the controversy surrounding President Akufo-Addo’s infamous “Are they stupid?” remark prior to the 2024 elections, suggesting the public backlash wasn’t just about tone, but deeper economic frustration.

“That is why the President asked, ‘Are they stupid?’ and they were offended. It is the economy.”

Kwame Julius emphasized that the outcome of the 2024 elections should serve as a wake-up call to all political parties: that Ghanaian voters are discerning, issue-driven, and will not reward parties that lose touch with their realities.
