GHC 500k entry fee expected as NPP opens flagbearer race

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially released its timetable for the upcoming presidential primaries, setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the most closely watched internal contests in recent party history.

According to a Facebook post by leading party figure Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, nominations will open on July 29, 2025, and close on August 28, 2025.

Aspirants and their teams are already bracing themselves for the financial demands of the process, with Appiah hinting at a filing fee not less than GHSC500,000.

He emphasised that any serious candidate should be prepared to raise such funds.

The schedule spans several key stages including vetting, petition submissions, and balloting, leading to the final vote on January 31, 2026, with a runoff date set for February 14, 2026, should no candidate secure an outright majority.

While the party is yet to officially confirm its lineup of aspirants, the spotlight is already falling on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, both of whom are seen as frontrunners.

The upcoming contest is widely anticipated to be a showdown between establishment continuity and populist defiance.

Bawumia, having served as Vice President since 2017, is expected to present himself as the natural successor to President Akufo-Addo, leveraging his experience.

On the other hand, Kennedy Agyapong, known for his outspoken style and maverick posture, is likely to run a campaign centred on radical change and anti-corruption.
