It’s going to be tough – Kwabena Agyepong on NPP flagbearer race

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has admitted that the road to the party’s flagbearer slot will be a challenging one—but says he’s fully prepared for it.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, after the NPP officially opened nominations for its 2026 presidential primaries, Agyepong was candid about the competition he faces.
“It’s going to be tough—I’m not making any bones about it,” he said.
Referring to the presence of heavyweights in the race, Agyepong acknowledged that one of his opponents, widely believed to be former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, brings considerable political visibility and experience to the table.
“One of my competitors has been a vice president, he’s been at the top for 16 years, and he enjoys significant visibility and name recognition,” Agyepong noted.
However, he was quick to highlight his own history and roots within the party, arguing that while he may have been out of frontline politics for a decade, his connection with the NPP’s grassroots remains strong and intact.
“I’ve been out of the picture for 10 years, but the kind of support I’m getting from the party’s grassroots is strong. They remember I was one of the young men who helped build this party from scratch,” he added.
He further stressed his unique standing among the aspirants: “Mind you, I’m the only one among the aspirants who has been elected as General Secretary.”
