Mahama vows to fix sports funding before leaving office

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that his administration is committed to securing dedicated funding for the sports sector in Ghana, much like what was achieved for the school feeding programme.

“One of the last things we want to do is to get dedicated funding for sports,” Mahama said in a recent address. “We are thinking about it, and I think that like we did to solve the school feeding programme—now do you hear anything about school feeding?—the same thing will happen with sports.”

He noted that the recurring issues surrounding financing, player allowances, and logistics for national teams would soon become a thing of the past.

“A time will come, and you won’t hear anything about ‘our money didn’t come,’ or ‘this and that happened.’ We’ll work to get dedicated funding for sports so that the issue of financing and teams travelling and getting their per diems and all that will be a thing of the past,” he assured.

Speaking further, Mahama praised the efforts of Ghanaian athletes, hinting that bigger achievements lie ahead.

“On behalf of myself and Jane, I want to congratulate you, thank you for the good job you did. We’ll keep watching your progress, and I’m sure that in the not too distant future, you’ll come with something more worthy than bronze—maybe silver, or maybe gold.”

Expressing optimism about the future of sports under his leadership, Mahama added: “I’m an optimist. I know I’ll see you here at Jubilee House with a gold medal before I leave office as president.”
