We’re watching the telcos – Sam George warns over poor network services

The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Sam George, has issued a stern warning to telecom companies, stating that government will not hesitate to apply heavy sanctions if quality of service continues to lag.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series, he revealed that Ghana’s three main telecom operators have committed to investing $150 million to improve their networks by the end of the year.

“We are very well aware of the challenges,” he said. “We’ve given them until the third quarter to implement improvements using the spectrum allocated. After that, we will begin rigorous enforcement.”

He further indicated that the Ministry of Communications will direct the National Communications Authority (NCA) to fine telcos that fail to meet service obligations.

Sam George also addressed growing public complaints about data bundles “disappearing,” attributing the issue largely to user behavior and settings. He noted that every case investigated so far by a task force set up at the NCA proved that “there has been no price tampering.”

“We won’t punish a company just because people are angry on social media. There must be evidence,” he emphasized, adding that even public figures like comedian DKB had realized their complaints were rooted in user error.

In addition to enforcing standards, the ministry is undertaking what he called the most comprehensive legal overhaul in Ghana’s ICT history. “Fifteen new pieces of legislation are being drafted,” he revealed, including laws on cybersecurity, digital innovation, AI, and cloud services.

He stressed that these reforms are essential for modernizing Ghana’s digital space and laying the foundation for President John Mahama’s 24-hour economy.
