We’ll defend ourselves if provoked in Akwatia – NPP warn

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised alarm over what it describes as a growing state of insecurity and electoral violence in the country, particularly in the lead-up to the Akwatia by-election.
Speaking after a meeting with the newly constituted Governing Board of the National Peace Council at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, also known as Nana B, emphasized the need for proactive engagement by the Council to prevent escalation of tensions.
“The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) met with the newly constituted Governing Board of the National Peace Council at the Party’s headquarters in Asylum Down,” Nana B said.
“The discussion centered on concerns regarding the alarming state of insecurity and electoral violence in the country, particularly concerning the recent Ablekuma North re-run and the upcoming Akwatia By-election.”
He expressed deep concern over the Council’s perceived inaction during previous flashpoints, cautioning that such silence could embolden acts of violence.
“The NPP leadership expressed concern to the Peace Council that their lack of action could lead to violence in the upcoming Akwatia by-election,” he warned.
While reaffirming the party’s commitment to peace, Nana B made it clear that the NPP would not remain passive if provoked.
“We emphasized that we would not engage in any political violence in Akwatia, but we would be adequately prepared to protect ourselves and also would be ready to fully confront any aggression from the NDC.”
