Saltpond set to get University College

Osagyefo Ernest De-Graft Egyir, a member of the National Economic Dialogue Committee and a native of Saltpond in the Mfantseman Municipality of Ghana’s Central Region, has pledged to collaborate with the youth to establish a University College in Saltpond.
As the Founder and President of the Mfantseman-Saltpond Development Alliance (MSDA), Osagyefo De-Graft Egyir expressed concern over the absence of a University College, limited job opportunities, and other developmental challenges in Saltpond.
Speaking to MyNewsGH.com reporter Hajia Asana Gordon shortly after the inauguration of the Mfantseman-Saltpond Development Alliance and the 1st Saltpond Homecoming Festival (SaltpondFest), he appealed to the government to construct a modern University College in Saltpond.
The MSDA inauguration was held under the theme, “United in Heritage, Driven by Progress.”
“MSDA is not just for a few; it is a rallying point for all. With unity, we can transform our challenges—poor roads, sanitation issues, and youth unemployment—into engines of growth and pride,” he said.
Osagyefo De-Graft Egyir explained that the mission of the Alliance is to empower the people of Mfantseman and Saltpond through cultural celebration, civic unity, and sustainable development, building a future grounded in identity and inspired by progress.
He further urged President John Dramani Mahama to designate Saltpond as the venue for this year’s National Celebration of Founders Day, highlighting that many political parties originated in the Mfantseman Municipality, specifically Saltpond.
“On behalf of the Mfantseman Saltpond Youth, I appeal to His Excellency President Dramani Mahama to make it possible to celebrate Founders Day in Saltpond to restore the town’s image,” he said.
Describing Saltpond’s rich history, Osagyefo De-Graft Egyir noted that the town is home to Ghana’s first oil rig, the country’s first post office, and the first political party office, yet it has never boasted a single factory.
“We inherit a rich legacy, but history alone will not feed our children, employ our youth, or solve our challenges. We must take the next step—from heritage to progress,” he emphasized.
He also announced plans by MSDA to establish a youth welfare program aimed at improving living standards among young people.
Additionally, Osagyefo De-Graft Egyir revealed ongoing efforts to develop a sustainable water system for the Saltpond Municipal Hospital to address persistent water shortages affecting patients and health workers.
Finally, he called on Saltpond natives living across the country to return home, reconnect, and join efforts to rebuild and develop the area.
