No bail for Wontumi TV host in Mahama crash comment case

The Accra Circuit Court has remanded Wontumi TV presenter Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare into police custody, rejecting a bail application from his defence team.
Speaking to Citi News after proceedings, Mr. Afoakwah criticised the ruling as a miscarriage of justice and vowed to appeal the case at the High Court.
Asare was arrested on Tuesday, August 12, after airing comments that authorities say falsely linked former President John Mahama to the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region.
The accident claimed eight lives and has plunged the nation into mourning, with a state funeral set for Friday, August 15.
In court on Thursday, the judge ruled that the presenter should remain in custody while investigations continue.
The decision came despite efforts by his lawyer, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, who argued for his release.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has announced the temporary closure of several public roads in Accra on Friday, August 15, 2025, to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the Inter-Denominational and Inter-Faith State Funeral for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash.
The event will be held at the Independence Square, and the affected roads include the stretch of 28th February Road from the CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to the Castle Road Junction, the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street, Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, and Starlet 91 Road, which will be closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.
