Court throws out K.T. Hammond’s election petition

The Obuasi High Court has dismissed an election petition filed by former Trade and Industry Minister, K.T. Hammond, challenging the parliamentary victory of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, in Adansi Asokwa.

Justice Kwabena Twumasi, delivering the ruling on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, struck out the case and fined Mr. Hammond GH¢60,000, describing the petition as a waste of the court’s time.

Counsel for Mr. Dorani, Richard Andy, welcomed the outcome, saying it confirmed the petition lacked merit and would now allow his client to focus fully on his parliamentary duties.

Mr. Hammond, who had represented Adansi Asokwa for over two decades on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), lost the 2024 election by 954 votes.

Mr. Dorani secured 14,229 ballots against his 13,275. Dissatisfied with the result, Hammond filed a petition on January 15, 2025, but his repeated absence from hearings ultimately led to its dismissal.

Although he has the right to appeal, the judge’s strong remarks and the accompanying fine cast doubt on the likelihood of success unless he presents fresh evidence or stronger legal arguments.
