Medical Negligence Costs Ghana Over GHC 10 Million Per Facility

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has explained that medical negligence has become a monster rearing its head in Ghana’s health sector that needs to be addressed.

He explains that the country is paying dearly for medical negligence, and the earlier the country addresses the issues in the various wards in the country, the better for the health system in Ghana.

The Minister of Health made this known when he met with journalists on Thursday, August 21, 2025.

He disclosed that the country, which does not have money to procure state-of-the-art equipment to support healthcare, spends not less than ten million cedis on each case recorded.

“Anytime I hear that, I cringe. we spend not less than, and in some cases, even one facility not less than Ghc 10 million on medical negligence. Maybe you don’t know but as a country we don’t have money to buy the equipment, but we are spending so much.

As I speak to you now, the cases on my table this week are three that the Attorney General has written to me to provide responses for, medical negligence, so it is a major issue that we are dealing with. I can’t put everything out but at the appropriate time we may address you on medical negligence, it is a monster rearing its head that we must deal with appropriately,” he stated.
