PAC cracks down on GHC 1.3m procurement irregularities at Finance Ministry

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has referred the Director of Internal Audit at the Ministry of Finance, Jacob Ahadzi, to the Attorney-General for possible prosecution over procurement breaches.

At its sitting, the committee heard Mr. Ahadzi admit that contracts worth GH¢1.3 million had been awarded without approval from the entity tender committee, a clear violation of the Public Procurement Act.

Ranking Member Samuel Atta Mills invoked Section 82 of the amendment law, stressing that accountability could not be compromised.

“We have no choice but to recommend you to the Attorney-General for prosecution. When it comes to procurement, we are not going to compromise,” he said.

The session also highlighted unresolved issues involving the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS). Mr. Ahadzi presented evidence that the GSS refunded GH¢6,400 into the Auditor-General’s recovery account, but admitted he had not furnished the Auditor-General with the documentation.

The committee insisted that the GSS appear in person to clarify matters. “If they were able to send you the evidence, let them come. We have helicopters available to bring them,” Atta Mills remarked.
