Wontumi FM journalist released on GHC100,000 bail

Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, a journalist with Kumasi-based Wontumi FM, has been granted bail after spending two weeks in police custody.

Asare was arrested on August 12, 2025, and charged with offensive conduct for allegedly publishing false news intended to cause fear, claiming on his programme that President John Dramani Mahama had prior knowledge of the August 6 helicopter crash that killed eight people.

The court set bail at GHC100,000 with two sureties, both of whom must be civil servants. His legal team is currently working to meet the conditions.

Prosecutors opposed bail, citing ongoing investigations, but presiding judge Samuel Bright Acquah ruled there was no sufficient reason to deny it, referencing a previous case involving a young man remanded for insulting then-President Akufo-Addo.

Asare is expected to return to court on September 1, 2025, as the case continues.
