IGP assures full security ahead of Akwatia by-election

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has reassured the Electoral Commission (EC) and residents of Akwatia of the police’s readiness to ensure a peaceful and secure by-election slated for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

“We are all with you, and it will be fine. We’re strong on the ground, we’re fully prepared. And we will give you the support,” the IGP stated during a tour of the Collation Centre on Monday, September 1.

During the inspection, he engaged with the EC’s National Director of Training, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, and the Eastern Regional EC Director, John Appiah Baffoe, emphasizing the police service’s commitment to providing maximum security throughout the electoral process.

Meanwhile, campaign activities have heightened in the constituency, with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia leading the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) push to retain the seat.

“I urge you to support Solomon Kwame Asumadu so that together we can continue the good works and legacy of our beloved Ernest Kumi,” Dr. Bawumia appealed to constituents while canvassing votes for the NPP’s candidate.

The by-election was triggered by the passing of the late MP Ernest Kumi, whose one-week observation was attended by Dr. Bawumia last Friday.

The former Vice President returned to Akwatia on Sunday to join the party’s parliamentary hopeful, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, in door-to-door interactions and rallies across the constituency.
