NDC clears 12 aspirants for Tamale Central Parliamentary primary

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared all 12 aspirants seeking to contest the party’s parliamentary primary in the Tamale Central Constituency, scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.

The vetting, led by the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Barbara Serwaa Asamoah, concluded on August 31, after which balloting was conducted to determine the order of candidates on the ballot.

Ms. Asamoah expressed satisfaction with the quality of aspirants, noting the historic participation of three women in the race.

She urged all contestants to conduct their campaigns with decorum and avoid actions that could create division within the party.

Similarly, Northern Regional Minister Ali Adolf John appealed to supporters to remain peaceful and avoid violence throughout the campaign period.

The primary is a crucial step ahead of the September 30 by-election, which will elect a replacement for the late Member of Parliament, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a military helicopter crash on August 6. Dr. Mohammed, who also served as Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, won the seat on the NDC’s ticket.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not field a candidate in the by-election.

Nominations for the primary were opened on August 22 and closed on August 24, setting the stage for a competitive race to select the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
