Azorka incident sparks anger in Akwatia by-election

There seems to be chaos in Akwatia Constituency as an altercation involving the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) National Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka, led to the reported assault of the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 3rd Vice Chairman.
The incident, which occurred while voting was ongoing in the constituency closely contested by-election, sparked outrage among some constituents who accused security personnel of failing to maintain order.
“We won’t condone any violence here in Akwatia. If the police can’t do their work, they should leave and let us handle our affairs,” one visibly frustrated constituent told MyNewsGh.
Authorities say calm has since been restored, but concerns remain high given Akwatia’s status as one of the most hotly contested swing seats between the governing NDC and the opposition NPP.
Earlier, Graphic Online’s Haruna Yussif Wunpini reported that voting began peacefully across all 119 polling stations in Akwatia under heavy security supervision.
Senior police officers, supported by junior personnel, were deployed across the constituency, with Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCOPs) and Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) overseeing electoral areas to ensure safety.
The stakes are high in this race, which features candidates from the NDC, NPP, and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
With 52,328 registered voters, both the governing NDC and the opposition NPP view Akwatia as a critical battleground.
