Bigger things ahead – Sophia Akuffo encourages former CJ Torkornoo

Justice Sophia Akuffo has sent a heartfelt message of comfort and encouragement to her successor, former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, following her controversial removal from office.

The former Chief Justice and Council of State member offered words of hope and reassurance, urging Justice Torkornoo to remain steadfast during this challenging period.

“She should take heart. God sees, and sometimes when you go through certain things which you think have brought you to the end or to your knees or something like that, that could be far from the truth,” she said in an interview with TV3.

Justice Akuffo emphasised that moments of setback often pave the way for greater opportunities, expressing her belief that brighter days lie ahead for the embattled former Chief Justice.

“There could be bigger, better and greater needs that the Lord has in store. That is what I will tell her, and that is what I will send to her as a text message,” she added.

Meanwhile, NPP member  Kow Abaka Essuman has also reacted to the development, warning that secrecy surrounding the process could deepen doubts about political interference.

He noted that several prominent figures — including former Chief Justices Sophia Akuffo and Kwasi Anin Yeboah — appeared before the committee in defence of Torkornoo. Yet, the public remains in the dark about the evidence considered.

“Given the gravity of the issues, the calibre of witnesses, and the far-reaching implications for the independence of the Judiciary, it is imperative that the Ghanaian public be fully apprised of what transpired,” Essuman said.

He cautioned that without disclosure, the episode could set a dangerous precedent, where petitions against judicial officers become partisan tools.
