Kofi Adams urges diplomats to champion sports diplomacy

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has called on the country’s Ambassadors and High Commissioners to make sports and recreation a key pillar of their economic diplomacy efforts.
Speaking at the Conference of Heads of Mission and Orientation Programme for Newly Appointed Envoys on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Mr. Adams urged diplomats to position Ghana as a prime destination for sports-related investments, highlighting opportunities in infrastructure development, youth talent academies, wellness industries, and sports equipment manufacturing.
He revealed that government-backed initiatives, including the Sports Development Fund—recently approved by President Mahama and awaiting parliamentary consideration—will provide sustainable financing for the sector.
Other flagship programmes include the National Recreation and Wellness Programme, which promotes mass participation through events like National Aerobics Day, and the School Sports Revitalisation Agenda, aimed at rebuilding grassroots talent pipelines.
Mr. Adams also encouraged envoys to explore Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) to attract global investors, assuring them of government’s commitment to maintaining a favorable business environment.
The conference, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, brought together envoys and sector experts to discuss strategies for strengthening Ghana’s economic diplomacy and boosting its global competitiveness.
